Portland’s Pearl: CARGO

My new obsession is the shop Cargo in Portland, located in the Pearl District. At first glance it looks like a mad Asian market/party store, something on the lines of Pearl River Mart in New York, but inside it is filled with an insanely cool collection of things. Everything from Indian rugs to Mao sculptures [...]

Home Sweet Home

My good friend Lily is incredibly stylish, intelligent and creative, as well as nice enough to allow me to publicize her very eclectic and charming apartment. Not only is the prewar architecture and detailing incredible, but Lily has an amazing knack for finding special antique treasures. If her apartment was a store, I would be [...]

Nick’s New York

Nick received a new camera for his birthday and he’s been taking some really cool shots. Aside from 2-3, all of the following are his…

London

After many travel complications due to the British Airways strike, Nick and I are finally home in San Francisco. We had an incredible time in London and Prague and I took a ridiculous number of pictures. The pictures speak for themselves but my top 3 highlights in the UK were: 1. The amazing packing design [...]

Killer Jellyfish

This morning swissmiss posted this new poster for sale (at Core77 by Allan) and I could not stop laughing. Allan, whoever you are, this is perfection.

Petaluma Antiques

Saturday Nick and I took his mom and brother to Petaluma where we spent a couple hours strolling through downtown and perusing the incredible antique stores. Whenever I’m in great antique stores I’m reminded of how much more interesting and unique vintage vs new furniture is and these shops were some of the best I’ve [...]

TED Talks

TED has been in the news a lot this week due to the controversy behind their decision to have Sarah Silverman speak then turning around and publically dissing her via Twitter. Though I have not seen the talk itself, I agree with the masses that TED showed a lack of insight in choosing Silverman and [...]

Etsy: Typography

One of my favorite past times is browsing through Etsy, “window shopping” and getting inspired. They have an ample collection of cool typography work, from posters to pillows.

Redesigning a Wine Label

Last night I googled myself for the first time in maybe three years. The last time I had done this there were maybe thirty links for Sara Khwaja (or Sarah Khawaja) and only one other person I could find with my exact name. This time there were over 160,000 links and tons of Sara Khwajas. [...]

Things I Have Learned In My Life So Far

I’ve been meaning to purchase Stefan Sagmeister’s latest book “Things I Have Learned In My Life So Far” for awhile now. His TED talks have made an indelible impression on me, especially this one in which he discusses the following list from the book. 1. Helping other people helps me. 2. Having guts always works [...]

IwamotoScott Architecture

Thanks to Design Milk I have a new obsession in architecture, the design firm IwamotoScott Architecture in San Francisco run by Lisa Iwamoto and Craig Scott. Check out more of their incredible work here. The Voussoir Cloud Moma/PS1 Reef

Creating a Multimedia Experience

For my second project for my multimedia class, we are creating an interactive environment in Flash that reflects who we are. My idea is to create an interactive “library of curiosities” that represents elements of my personality and life experiences. The library will take elements from Gypsy Honeymoon, the eclectic antique store I use to [...]

Sundays Live at the LACMA

My mother was in the symphony in San Francisco and as a child she would only allow classical music in the house (she thinks Coldplay is hard music), hence I’m quite familiar with classical music. However, aside from the recorder and xylophone in middle school, I never learned to play an instrument. So last spring [...]

Please Rewind

For the next few weeks I’ll be using this blog to post some multimedia project information for one of my classes. So here goes… Our first project, a narrative montage, had me using Final Cut Pro and Soundtrack Pro for the first time. Aside from my one iMovie, this type of work is completely new [...]

Man Shops Globe

I worked at Anthropologie for a number of years and many of my closest friends are still part of the company, which is how I heard about this new show from the Sundance Channel called Man Shops Globe that airs this Wednesday. The show follows Anthro’s Buyer-at-Large Keith Johnson as he scouts out key items [...]

Bokeh Camera Filter

The Bokeh camera filter is a filter for SLR cameras that turns blurs of light into stars and hearts. (Bokeh means blur in Japanese.) I’ve been eyeing one for awhile and just found this do-it-yourself version.

A Meal Without Wine…

I love this print from the Keep Calm Gallery. A meal without wine is like a day without sunshine. It can come as a tea towel too.

Do-It-Yourself Braided Necklace

Pretty cool DIY project for a creative and unique necklace…and out of scraps no less! Make your own statement neck piece from OolaMoola on Vimeo.

ART in INdustry

ART in INdustry is a London art exhibition at the Shunt Lounge in the basement of the London Bridge. This year they featured Cristina Guitian, an amazing London artist who has a wonderful talent for murals. I love the playful collage quality of her work and her use of typography.

Manifestos

This hardly has the serious edge of the First Things First Manifesto, however it is a personal manifesto. Pretty clever and fun. I need a manifesto. Designed by Mark Pavey.
