TED has been in the news a lot this week due to the controversy behind their decision to have Sarah Silverman speak then turning around and publically dissing her via Twitter. Though I have not seen the talk itself, I agree with the masses that TED showed a lack of insight in choosing Silverman and [...]
Friday night Nick & I headed over to House of Shields to see our friends Dean & Laura play a Haiti benefit gig with their band Tracing Figures. The bar itself is a piece of charming San Francisco history in that it is rumored that President Warren G. Harding died in this speakeasy and was [...]
I’ve been a huge Interpol fan for years and when I lived in the East Village I would often cross paths with members of the band and want to say “You’re awesome!” to them, but was always too scared to. I’m not one to get starstruck, but I fear invading other people’s space and coming [...]
Wednesday night Nick and I went to see Atlas Sound & Broadcast, neither of which we’ve seen live before. The Selmaraines were the warm up band and though we could only hear them from the line outside to get in, they sounded pretty good. Bradford Cox was rad-he is one talented guy, and Broadcast was [...]
Sunday night Nick and I went to see Monsters of Folk at the Greek Theater. He’s a huge My Morning Jacket fan and we both like M. Ward and Bright Eyes, so it was cool to see the collaborative project mesh so well in their debut album and we were excited to check them out [...]
My mother was in the symphony in San Francisco and as a child she would only allow classical music in the house (she thinks Coldplay is hard music), hence I’m quite familiar with classical music. However, aside from the recorder and xylophone in middle school, I never learned to play an instrument. So last spring [...]
This weekend Nick and I went to see An Education, a coming of age story set in 1960s London and based on the memoirs of Lynn Barber. Directed by Lone Scherfig and with a screenplay by Nick Hornby, the film was a huge hit when it premiered at Sundance in January. The film is absolutely [...]
Monday night Nick and I went to see Thom Yorke play at the Orpheum Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles. The Orpheum is a great venue as far as ambiance and acoustics. The decor is elegant and highly decorative, typical of theaters coming out of the Jazz Age. It reminded me of the United Palace Theatre [...]
For the next few weeks I’ll be using this blog to post some multimedia project information for one of my classes. So here goes… Our first project, a narrative montage, had me using Final Cut Pro and Soundtrack Pro for the first time. Aside from my one iMovie, this type of work is completely new [...]
I worked at Anthropologie for a number of years and many of my closest friends are still part of the company, which is how I heard about this new show from the Sundance Channel called Man Shops Globe that airs this Wednesday. The show follows Anthro’s Buyer-at-Large Keith Johnson as he scouts out key items [...]
I am eager to see the newly released film Art & Copy directed by Doug Pray (who also directed the amazing Surfwise). It’s a film about advertising, inspiration and cultural manipulation and seems to fit perfectly into my research of social design. I also love the posters for it. Watch the trailer below.
I saw this on Swissmiss and I couldn’t resist sharing. I was obsessed with Tetris as a kid and I love how they brought the game to life. Quite simply, this video is rad.
My friend Andy has been keeping his musical talents hidden. The songs on his blog, The Heart of Saturday Night, blew me away. Check out Levity and Beneath the Willow Tree as well as a duet he did with his lovely girlfriend Leah called Cook to Bang.
I am a huge fan of Blu so I was thrilled to see this recent video addition. Amazing.
Our lovely friend Tom made this cool video from our wedding weekend. I love images cut to music (or vice versa). And I love how Tom sped up the dancing portion so everyone looked like they were swinging back and forth. Thanks Tom! San Francisco from Tom Suharto on Vimeo.
On Friday Nick, our friend Annalise and I went to see Andrew Bird at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles. I had seen Andrew Bird once before at a mini venue called The Galaxy on Mission Street in San Francisco. Despite being 15-20 feet from the stage, the venue was so ill-configured that most of [...]
After a fun and melodic Friday night at the Grizzly Bear show at the Wiltern Theatre, Nick and I decided to have a mellow weekend on the Westside with Oakley. Saturday we finally got the wedding invitations out, having spent a long while sorting out postage with the post office since we had added wax [...]
Last night was the Camera Obscura show at the Music Box at the Fonda (such a weird name). Nick’s dad was in town and we had dinner with him beforehand, so we ended up missing the warm up band (again), but came right in between sets. I’d never been to the Music Box before and [...]
Urban Outfitters has a music blog where they give away free songs from a variety of bands. In the past they’ve had free CDs and iTunes mixes that were mediocre or ridiculously mainstream, but their new addition is quite cool, with music from Grizzly Bear, Au Revoir Simone, DOOM, Apostle of Hustle, Passion Pit, Papercuts [...]
On Friday night, Nick, my friend Annalise and I all went to see Little Joy at the Troubador in Hollywood. The Troubador is one of my favorite Los Angeles venues. It’s small and friendly, with the stage close to the ground, two bars and a bunch of benches on the mezzanine to watch bands from [...]
I am really seriously digging Camera Obscura right now. I had listened to them before, mostly in passing and always thinking to myself “I need to get their album and check them out!”. So when Nick brought home their new album My Maudlin Career a couple months ago, I thought “Oh shit. I love this. [...]
