My good friend Lily is incredibly stylish, intelligent and creative, as well as nice enough to allow me to publicize her very eclectic and charming apartment. Not only is the prewar architecture and detailing incredible, but Lily has an amazing knack for finding special antique treasures. If her apartment was a store, I would be [...]
After many travel complications due to the British Airways strike, Nick and I are finally home in San Francisco. We had an incredible time in London and Prague and I took a ridiculous number of pictures. The pictures speak for themselves but my top 3 highlights in the UK were: 1. The amazing packing design [...]
One of my favorite past times is browsing through Etsy, “window shopping” and getting inspired. They have an ample collection of cool typography work, from posters to pillows.
Two years ago I saw these Pantone mugs in an art store in London and instantly fell in love. (In fact I’m sure many designers are coveting them.) I wanted to buy them but not only were they about $15 each, but they wouldn’t fit in my suitcase. I convinced myself I could find them [...]
Last night I googled myself for the first time in maybe three years. The last time I had done this there were maybe thirty links for Sara Khwaja (or Sarah Khawaja) and only one other person I could find with my exact name. This time there were over 160,000 links and tons of Sara Khwajas. [...]
I’ve been meaning to purchase Stefan Sagmeister’s latest book “Things I Have Learned In My Life So Far” for awhile now. His TED talks have made an indelible impression on me, especially this one in which he discusses the following list from the book. 1. Helping other people helps me. 2. Having guts always works [...]
Thanks to Design Milk I have a new obsession in architecture, the design firm IwamotoScott Architecture in San Francisco run by Lisa Iwamoto and Craig Scott. Check out more of their incredible work here. The Voussoir Cloud Moma/PS1 Reef
For my second project for my multimedia class, we are creating an interactive environment in Flash that reflects who we are. My idea is to create an interactive “library of curiosities” that represents elements of my personality and life experiences. The library will take elements from Gypsy Honeymoon, the eclectic antique store I use to [...]
This hardly has the serious edge of the First Things First Manifesto, however it is a personal manifesto. Pretty clever and fun. I need a manifesto. Designed by Mark Pavey.
Designed by Camdon Wilde of Squidspot, this Periodic Table of Typefaces vinyl is the perfect office wall accessory for any design geek (as well as a helpful tool for memorizing typefaces).
I’m impressed with the infographic designs by Nathan Yau of FlowingData. As a visual person I find it very hard to process information that is disorganized and designed without any attention to aesthetics. The use of geometry and color makes this design easy to read and understand while also being pleasing to the eye. You [...]
I am eager to see the newly released film Art & Copy directed by Doug Pray (who also directed the amazing Surfwise). It’s a film about advertising, inspiration and cultural manipulation and seems to fit perfectly into my research of social design. I also love the posters for it. Watch the trailer below.
I am a huge fan of Blu so I was thrilled to see this recent video addition. Amazing.
Have you heard of this? The Peepoobag is a portable and biodegradable toilet designed to decrease disease and water contamination. The bag is lined with urea, which breaks down waste into fertilizer. How very clever. It was tested in Nairobi and will be coming to developing countries soon. Victor Papanek would be proud. Invented by [...]
I have become increasingly obsessed and impressed with Etsy while shopping for wedding gifts, jewelry and ideas. Below is a list of some of my favorite items (click on the picture to be taken to the store).
I actually only spent a whopping $2 in New York on non-food and transportation items, and Khrista spent little more, but we had a great time perusing boutiques. One of my favorite areas to shop (or on this trip, window shop) is Nolita. A jewelry shop that I adore is Shape of Lies near Thomkins [...]
I’ve been discussing business cards a lot lately. My professor recently showed me a business card he received made by a company in New Zealand that was using a new kind of paper that is unrippable and I believe waterproof. I have yet to make my own, too overwhelmed with the vast number of directions [...]
